do you notice or not, but recently media are highlighting the refusal of Selangor state to the project of PPAMPS (projek pengaliran air mentah Pahang Selangor). Well, i am not going to talk politics here, nope in my blog but the topic here what i consent more.
Over the last two decades, several major water crises have surfaced, for instance in Melaka (1990), Selangor (1998) and both Negri Sembilan and Johor (2005). The crises caused considerable hardship and economic losses. The 1998 water crisis that hit Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya left 1.8 million people high and dry for six agonising months.
Although Malaysia experienced these painful water crises, it appears that we are still unaware of the seriousness of the matter. In fact, a water crisis is looming in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya - the most important economic growth centres in the country.
Many parties have given their views on the water crisis and have suggested that it would not happen or have offered proposals to overcome the impending shortage. Some of the conclusions made are based on a lack of understanding of the actual facts. It would be necessary to put matters in the right perspective to enable us to adopt the appropriate solutions.
Network connectivity
Currently, the total dependable supply capacity for Selangor is 4,256 MLD. However, due to constraints or limitations in the distribution network, it is not possible to supply water to all areas of Selangor,Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. It would not be cost effective to achieve 100% connectivity as the costs of laying pipelines would be exorbitant.
Water supply can be interrupted at any time due to several factors. For instance, pollution of raw water sources often leads to a shutdown of one or more water treatment plants. Droughts can also affect supply, resulting in insufficient raw water for the treatment plants.
Water-saving campaigns
Water-saving campaigns have often been launched whenever we faced a crisis. But such campaigns were found to be ineffective due to various factors, including a low water tariff regime, lack of enforcement and limited water fittings in the plumbing system to conserve water.
